Abstract

A hydrophilic photographic paper support is made by coating a paper support with a chromium halide complex of a long-chain fatty acid, drying it and bombarding the coated surface with electrons until the water contact angle is less than 73 degrees. The water contact angle is determined by placing a drop of distilled water on the level sample, and projecting an image of the drop and sample on to a screen. The angle between the unwetted surface of the sample and a tangent to the drop image at the point where the edge of the drop touches the sample is measured and is the water contact angle. The support may be treated by dip-coating or tub-sizing with the chromium halide complex dissolved in a mixture of alcohol and water and then heated to dry it and may also be calendered before bombardment. The paper may be of partially acetylated fibres. The sizing compound may also contain urea and sodium formate. The coated paper may be further coated with a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion. Specification 937,494 is referred to.
