Abstract

882,300. Protective arrangements. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. March 16, 1959 [March 20, 1958], No. 8968/59. Class 38 (5). The cycling or hunting of a " latch type " relay 11, should a control switch 31 be held closed when the relay is tripped open, is prevented by a capacitor 22 connected in series with the closing coil 12 of the relay. In the alternator control circuit shown, the charging current through the capacitor 22 on closure of the switch 31 energizes the coil 12 sufficiently for the relay to close and be latched closed by a latch 13. The relay 11 opens contacts 19 to open the circuit of the coil 12 and closes contacts 20 to enable the capacitor to be fully charged. If, now, protective relays 26 close contacts 27, the latch is released by the coil 14 and the relay 11 opens. If the switch 31 has been held closed, the relay does not reclose automatically as the charged capacitor prevents further flow of current through the coil 12. On the release of the switch 31, the capacitor discharges through a resistor 34 and rectifier 32 to prepare the circuit for a further closing operation. Specification 868,253 is referred to.
