Abstract

Aqueous suspensions of mineral substances such as clay or sand decolourized by means of an acid reducing agent are neutralized by the addition of a carbonate or bicarbonate of the alkali or alkaline earth metals with the addition of an alkali metal silicate, while the suspension is acid, e.g. sodium silicate added prior to or during the neutralization procedure or after partial neutralization. 5 to 20 lbs. of sodium silicate per ton of clay may be used. The reducing agent may be zinc hydrosulphite generated in situ by the addition to the aqueous suspension of sodium bisulphite, zinc dust, and sulphuric acid. The use of a mixture of sodium hydrosulphite and sulphuric acid, and of stannous chloride in the presence of an acid is referred to. In an example, sodium bisulphite, zinc powder, and sulphuric acid are added to an aqueous suspension of china clay of 0,35% Fe content, and the mixture is stirred for 1/2 hour. Calcium carbonate is added until a pH of 4 is obtained, and then 1,07 g. of sodium silicate solution, and the mixture, now of pH 6, is stirred for a few minutes. The clay is filtered off and dried.
