Abstract

The Specification comprises addition polymers of monomeric vinyl aromatic compounds with unsaturated cross-linked polyester resins which contain endomethylene tetrahydrophenyl radicals, endomethylene hexahydrophenyl radicals, 2,5-methylene-bicyclo-[0,3,4]-nonenyl, radicals or 2,5-methylene-bicyclo-[0,3,4]-nonyl radicals. The said radicals are preferably introduced into the unsaturated polyester resins by using a monohydric alcohol such as dicyclopentadienyl alcohol, dihydro-dicyclopentadienyl alcohol, endomethylene tetrahydrobenzyl alcohol and endomethylene hexahydrobenzyl alcohol. Maleic acid or its anhydride is used as the essential dicarboxylic acid component, with or without the addition of phthalic anhydride. Aconitic acid or pyromellitic acid may be used as polycarboxylic acids. The alcohols may also include ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerine, trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol or alcohols derived from sugars, such as mannitol. The products may be reinforced by glass, asbestos, and textile fibres. In examples, polymerization is effected in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, cyclohexanone peroxide, and methyl ethyl ketone hydroperoxide. N-hexanol, n-octanol xylene, hydroquinone, methyl ethyl ketone, dibutyl phthalate, adipic acid, cobalt naphthenate, calcium carbonate, barium sulphate, titanium dioxide, kaolin and powdered glass may also be added.
