Abstract

1279258 Unsaturated polyester resins DR BECK & CO (INDIA) Ltd 8 April 1970 [9 April 1969] 18285/69 Headings C3P and C3R An unsaturated polyester resin is produced by reacting a glycidyl ether or a mixture thereof, with one or more unsaturated polycarboxylic acids or anhydrides thereof, or a mixture of one or more saturated and one or more unsaturated polycarboxylic acids or anhydrides thereof, the reaction being continued until the acid value falls to below 20, preferably below 9. The unsaturated acid may be fumaric or maleic acid and the saturated acid may be phthalic, isophthalic, terephthalic, adipic or hexahydrophthalic acid. One or more polyhydric alcohols may be added to the reaction mixture, such as ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, glycerol, pentaerythritol, propylene glycol or dipropylene glycol. The reaction mixture may include a monobasic organic acid such as benzoic, naphthoic, acetic or butyric acid. The resins may be cured by mixing with a vinyl monomer such as styrene or diallyl phthalate and cross-linking the mixture in the presence of a catalyst such as tertiary butyl perbenzoate or methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and cobalt octoate.
