Abstract

1,240,627. Polyester resin compositions. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. 22 Aug., 1969 [23 Aug., 1968], No. 42097/69. Heading C3P. The viscosity of a polyester resin composition, which is a mixture comprising at least one polyester resin which is a reaction product of at least one dibasic carboxylic acid (or anhydride) and at least one glycol and having an acid number of from 10 to 100 and having at least onefourth of the ester end groups as carboxyls, at least one polymerizable vinyl monomer, a freeradical generating catalyst, and a polymerization inhibitor, is increased by (a) adding to the mixture a material selected from calcium oxide and calcium oxide/hydroxide mixtures, the material being in an amount of from ¢ to 10 moles of the material per carboxyl equivalent of the polyester resin; to form a homogenous composition; and (b) adding to the homogenous composition, water to give an amount of water of from “ to 5 moles of water per carboxyl equivalent of the polyester resin. In the examples the mixtures comprise polyesters derived from isophthalic acid, fumaric and propylene glycol, styrene, quinone, 2,5-dimethyl hexane-2,5-diperoctoate, water, calcium stearate, calcium carbonate, calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide and fiberglass mats are impregnated.
