Abstract

Unsaturated alkyd resins, copolymerizable with unsaturated monomers to give products free from surface tackiness, are made by reacting (a) an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride (b) a dihydric aliphatic alcohol containing 2-4 carbon atoms (c) 0,05-0,2 mol. of sorbitol or iso-sorbitol per mol. of total polyhydric alcohol, and, if desired (d) a dicarboxylic acid or anhydride free from polymerizable double bonds. Specified are-for (a) maleic or fumaric acid or anhydride; for (b) ethylene glycol, 1:2- or 1:3-propanediol, 1:2-, 1:3-, 1:4- or 2:3- butane diol, 1:4-butenediol, a mixture of ethylene glycol, 1:2-propanediol and 1:3-butanediol, a mixture of ethylene glycol and 1:2-propenediol and a mixture of 1:2-propanediol and 1:3-butanediol; and for (d) phthalic, succinic, adipic, sebacic and suberic acid or anhydride. Specified monomers are styrene, alpha-methylstyrene, vinyltoluene, vinyl cyclohexene, vinyl acetate and monohydric alcohol esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid. As a copolymerization catalyst, a mixture of cyclohexanone peroxide and cobalt. naphthenate may be used. The polyester monomer compositions may contain fillers and pigments. In samples hydroquinone is added to inhibit premature polymerization; and the product is applied as a varnish.
