Abstract

Unsaturated polyesters and styrene are copolymerized in bulk in the presence of 0.1 to 3 per cent of an unpolymerizable hydrophobic substance containing a hydrocarbon radical of 10 to 40 carbon atoms, and a catalyst and accelerator. Hydrophobic substances specified are paraffin wax, ceresin, montan wax and its esters and stearic acid. The unsaturated polyesters may be derived from maleic, fumaric, muconic, phthalic, terephthalic, succinic, adipic, sebacic and suberic acids and dihydric alcohols such as glycol, diglycol, propane-diols, butanediols and 1,4-butanediol. Catalysts disclosed are benzoyl, lauroyl and t.-butyl peroxides and 1 - hydroxy - 11 - hydroperoxy - dicyclohexyl peroxide and the accelerators may be the naphthenates of iron, manganese and cobalt. In a preferred process the polymerization is carried out in a thin layer, the polymerizable mixture containing one component of the initiation system while the second component is added either to the substrate before application of the mixture or to said layer of mixture after its application. The products are useful as lacquers for iron or wood and may include titanium dioxide.
