Abstract

A hard wax rich in esters is produced by oxidizing in the molten state at not above 200 DEG C., preferably 130 DEG -170 DEG C., with oxygen or a gas containing oxygen such as air or oxygenenriched air a mixture of (a) montan wax acids and (b) natural or synthetic paraffin hydrocarbons, including microcrystalline waxes, having solidification point above 70 DEG C., preferably above 90 DEG C., which may contain not more than 40% by weight of (b) of (c) wax-like high or low pressure polyolefins, suitably polyethylene and/or polypropylene, having molecular weights of 1,000-20,000, preferably 5,000-10,000. The oxidation is generally carried out in the presence of up to 1% by weight of a catalyst such as a metal salt or oxide, an organic peroxide or an acid, but most usually cobalt or manganese stearate or naphthenate, the ratio of montan wax acids to hydrocarbons in the reaction mixture being 4:1 to 1:4, and air being passed into the mixture at 200-1,000 l./hr./kg. of mixture. Any free acid groups present in the hard wax product may be subsequently converted into salt form, or into amide or ester groups. The product may be used in floor polishes or leatherdressing compositions, and may be mixed with lime soap or with other ester, amide, or hydrocarbon waxes.ALSO:A hard wax rich in esters is produced by oxidizing in the molten state at not above 200 DEG C., preferably 130 DEG -170 DEG C., with oxygen or gas containing oxygen such as air or oxygen-enriched air a mixture of (a) montan wax acids, (b) natural or synthetic paraffin hydrocarbons having a solidification point above 70 DEG C. and preferably above 90 DEG C., and (c) wax-like high or low pressure olefins, suitably polyethylene and/or polypropylene having a molecular weight of 1,000-20,000, preferably 5,000-10,000, the amount of (c) comprising up to 40% by weight of (b) and the ratio of (a) to hydrocarbons in the reaction mixture being 4:1 to 1:4. The oxidation is generally carried out in the presence of up to 1% by weight of a catalyst such as a metal salt or oxide, an organic peroxide or an acid, most usually cobalt or manganese stearate or naphthenate, air being passed into the mixture at 200-1,000 l./hr./kg. of mixture.
