[Also in Division C3] Wax coating and laminating compositions comprise:- (A) 100 parts by weight of wax, of M.Pt. >120‹ F; (B) 5-150 parts by weight of an ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer of 5-35% by weight vinyl acetate, and of melt index 0À1-1000; and (C) a compatible acid component in an amount sufficient to impart to the composition an acid No. of 5-200, said component containing at least 35% by weight acid and at least 5% by weight liquid, said acid and liquid having a B.Pt. >300‹ F. at 7 mm. Hg and comprising one or more, as necessary, of:- (1) a carboxylic acid which is liquid at 70‹ F., has a viscosity of 500-10,000 S.S.U. at 100‹ F., a molecular weight of 400-2500, and an acid No. >20. (2) a hydrocarbon which is liquid at 70‹ F. and which is (a) an oil of viscosity 300-3000 S.S.U. at 100‹ F., (b) a styrene polymer of viscosity 800-100,000 S.S.U. at 100‹ F. and of M.W. 300-3000, (c) a butene polymer havng a butene content 9#0% by weight, a viscosity of 1000 to 1,000,000 S.S.U. at 100‹ F. and M.W. 300-12,000, or (d) a propene polymer of viscosity 10,000-1,000,000 at 100‹ F. and of M.W. 800-3500; or (3) a carboxylic acid of M.Pt. >70‹ F., having a M.W. 150-1500, and an acid No. >20. Preferably (A) is paraffin (M.Pt. 115- 200‹ F.) and/or microcrystalline (M.Pt. 140- 210‹ F.) wax in an amount either 100% by weight microcrystalline wax, or 20-80% by wt. paraffin wax and 80-20% microcrystalline wax. Other specified waxes are ozocerite, montan, carnauba, candelilla, Japan, beeswax, Chinese and insect waxes, and synthetic waxes including polyhydric alcohol esters, hydrogenated vegetable oils and Fischer-Tropsch waxes. The copolymer (B) is preferably used in an amount 10-35% by weight of (A). The concentration of acid component (C) required to give the specified acid number is generally 10-150% by weight of (A); numerous aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic acids having one or more carboxyl groups are disclosed, and these may be liquid or solid. In the latter case the liquid component of (C) is provided by the oil, or styrene, butene or propene polymer. A particularly preferred composition contains as acid component a mixture of 70-95% by weight rosin acid and 5-30% by wt. of a dimer of 9,12-octadecadienoic acid or polystyrene. Conventional additives may be included; solid glycol esters of rosin acids are specified as stabilizers.
