Abstract

Metal-containing synthetic resins prepared according to the parent Specification are modified by reaction, preferably with warming, with one or more aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acids or their anhydrides, resin acids or higher molecular fatty acids or their polymerizable esters. The products are suitable for lacquers. Specified modifying ingredients are adipic, succinic, sebacic, maleic, phthalic, or terephthalic acid or anhydride, colophony, soya oil fatty acid, cocoanut oil fatty acid, linseed oil fatty acid, oleic acid, stearic acid, fatty acids obtained by oxidation of paraffin mixtures or vinyl or allyl esters of the fatty acids. Preferably 1 gram mol. of modifying reactant is added per gram atom of metal in the resin. In the examples (1) Phthalic anhydride was added to a warm resin from aluminium butylate and aceto-acetic ester. The product was soluble in butanol, benzene, butyl acetate or acetone. (2) Linseed oil fatty acid was used in place of phthalic anhydride. (3) The modifying reactant was a mixture of fatty acids (C4-C11) obtained by oxidation of paraffin and partially converted to vinyl esters by treatment with acetylene.
