Abstract

Synthetic resins formed by the process of Specification 718,283 are modified by blowing oxygen through them at elevated temperature, e.g. 160 DEG C., followed, if desired, by addition of one or more aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides, resin acids, or higher molecular weight fatty acids or their polymerizable esters. Suitable dicarboxylic acids are adipic, succinic, sebacic, maleic, phthalic or terephthalic. Colophony may be used as a resin acid. Suitable fatty acids are soya oil fatty acid, coco-nut oil fatty acid, linseed oil acids, oleic acid, stearic acid or acids obtained by oxidizing mixtures of paraffins. Polymerizable esters of these acids on the vinyl or allyl esters. The treatment with oxygen may be carried out in presence of an oxidation catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide. It may last for 20-30 hours. In the example aluminium butylate was refluxed with acetoacetic ester, volatile matter was removed by heating if desired in vacuum. Oxygen was blown through the oil residue in presence of benzoyl peroxide. A thermoplastic brown resin soluble in butanol, benzene, monial spirits or ethanol results.
