Abstract

Synthetic resins are produced by heating at elevated temperatures a halide or an alcoholate (from a monohydric aliphatic alcohol) of a metal with a valency of 3 or more with a compound showing keto-enol tautomerism and which is a b -ketocarboxylic acid, a b -diketone or a malonic acid ester at least one mol. of the latter being used/atomic weight of metal. Metal compounds mentioned are the butylates or propylates of aluminium, iron, titanium, and aluminium chloride. Tautomers mentioned are acetoacetic ester, diethyl malonate, and formylacetophenone. Reaction is preferably effected in vacuo. In Example 1 aluminium butylate is refluxed with acetoacetic ester, volatile components removed by heating to 130-150 DEG C. in vacuo or higher without a vacuum, and an air-drying oil is left as product, (2) aluminium butylate is reacted with diethyl malonate; (3) ferric butylate is reacted with acetoacetic ester; (4) aluminium chloride is reacted with acetoacetic ester in toluene at temperatures which reach 180 DEG C.; (5) titanium butylate is refluxed with acetoacetic ester. Specifications 289,493, [Class 2 (iii)], and 630,319, and U.S.A. Specification 2,169,577 are referred to.ALSO:Synthetic resins are produced by heating at elevated temperatures a halide or an alcoholate (from a monohydric aliphatic alcohol) of a metal with a valency of 3 or more with a compound showing keto-enol tautomerism and which is a b -ketocarboxylic acid, a b -diketone or a malonic acid ester, at least one mol. of the latter being used per atomic weight of metal. Metal compounds mentioned are the butylates or propylates of aluminium, iron, titanium and aluminium chloride. Tautomers mentioned are acetoacetic ester, diethyl malonate and formylacetophenone. Reaction is preferably effected in vacuo. In examples (1) aluminium butylate is refluxed with acetoacetic ester, volatile components removed by heating to 130-150 DEG C. in vacuo or higher without a vacuum, and an airdrying oil is left as product; (2) aluminium butylate is reacted with diethyl malonate; (3) ferric butylate is reacted with acetoacetic ester; (4) aluminium chloride is reacted with acetoacetic ester in toluene at temperatures which reach 180 DEG C.; (5) titanium butylate is refluxed with acetoacetic ester.
