Modified alkyd resins are produced by condensation of polyhydric alcohols, polycarboxylic acids or anhydrides and oils in the presence of polyamide resin and preferably metal oxides (such as lead oxide) until an acid value of the dry matter of below 10 is reached. Preferably the ratio of the number of hydroxyl groups to the number of carboxylic acid groups in the condensation product is 1À2 : 1 to 4À5 : 1, the oil present during condensation amounts at most to 50% by weight with respect to the mixture of polycarboxylic acid or anhydride, polyhydric alcohol and oil, and the quantity of polyamide resin is 0À1 to 5À0% by weight with respect to the quantity of alkyd resin: Specified reactants are: phthalic acid; hexane-triol or pentaerythritol; and fish, soya bean, castor or linseed oils. The modified alkyd resin may be prepared by mixing a resin containing a polyamide resin content in excess of 5% with an alkyd resin, preferably followed by treatment at 40-70‹ C. in the presence of a peroxide and a metal salt such as a copper salt.
