Abstract

Polymerizable compositions comprise unsaturated polyester resins having acid numbers not greater than 100 and lithium halides as stabilizers or promoters. The compositions may also comprise copolymerizable monomers, e.g. styrene, p-methyl styrene, vinyl toluene, divinyl benzene, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrolein, diallyl phthalate, triallyl cyanurate and the diallyl ester of endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic anhydride; catalysts, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, tertiary butylhydroperoxide, cyclohexanol peroxide, ascaridol, cumene hydroperoxide, cymene hydroperoxide, sec. butyl benzene hydroperoxide and 1-methyl tetralin hydroperoxide; and copper naphthenate. The preferred halide is lithium chloride. The polyester may be derived from maleic, fumaric, glutaconic, itaconic, mesaconic, citraconic, allyl malonic, allyl succinic and xeronic acids, optionally together with phthalic, isophthalic, tetrachlorophthalic, hexachloroendomethylene tetrahydrophthalic, adipic and sebacic acids; and from ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol and small amounts of higher polyhydric p alcohols such as glycerol, pentaerythritol and mannitol. Glass and asbestos fibres and conventional fillers, stabilizers and pigments may also be added and the compositions used for moulding, laminating and extruding. Products such as button blanks and corrugated panels may be cut or stamped from the semi-cured compositions and postcured at elevated temperatures.
