Abstract

A stable, air-permeable thermosetting composition comprises an unsaturated polyester, a catalyst and a filler comprising 25 to 65 per cent glass fibres, 5 to 30 per cent ground mica and 5 to 35 per cent of clay, ground calcium carbonate or finely divided silicates. The polyesters may be derived from various polyhydric alcohols and maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic or mesaconic acids and may be modified or unmodified. A monomer such as diallyl phthalate, styrene, or its derivatives, acrolein, triallyl cyanurate, methacrylates, acrylates, or vinyl or allyl esters (see U.S.A. Specification 2,632,751 may also be included. Specified catalysts are organic peroxides such as benzoyl peroxide, and organic ozonides. Other fillers such as tale, calcium or magnesium silicates and antimony oxide may also be present and other ingredients used in the examples are titanium dioxide, iron oxide, zinc stearate and beechwood chips distillate. In the preparation of the composition the glass fibres are added last to the softened resin containing the other fillers. The moulded compositions are useful in electrical insulation.
