Abstract
A composition capable of polymerizing at room or higher temperatures to a hard non-thermoplastic condition comprises one or more alpha, beta unsaturated alkyd resins and one or more polymerizable substances having a CH2=C< group and a boiling point above 60 DEG C., an organic hydroperoxide or peracid and a metal salt drier. Specified metal salt driers are manganese naphthenate and cobalt naphthenate. The organic hydroperoxide may be 1-hydroxy cyclohexyl hydroperoxide-1, tetralin-, cumene- or tertiary butyl hydroperoxide and the peracid may be tertiary butyl diperphthalate or tertiary butyl perbenzoate. The hydroperoxide may be incorporated in the polymerization mixture as a solution in dibutyl phthalate. The alkyd resins may be made from acids such as maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic or mixtures of these acids and a saturated aliphatic or aromatic polycarboxylic acid such as phthalic acid, endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, adipic or sebacic acid by condensation with polyhydric alcohols such as ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, alpha-propylene glycol, butylene glycols, decamethylene glycol or octadecandiol. Specified alkyd resins are propylene glycol fumarate-phthalate; propylene glycol fumarate-tetrachlorphthalate; diethylene glycol fumarate - phthalate, diethylene glycol sebacate-fumarate. The polymerizable substance may be styrene; ortho-, meta-, or para-methyl styrene, monochlor- or dichlorstyrene, dimethyl styrenes, vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, allyl acetate, diallyl phthalate, diallyl fumarate, diallyl maleate, diallyl sebacate, diallyl succinate, triallyl phosphate, triallyl tricarballylate or the diallyl ester of ammelide. The compositions may include fillers, dyes, pigments such as wood flour, glass fibres, asbestos fibres, and titanium dioxide. Mouldings, castings and laminated sheet materials, e.g. of paper or fabric composed of cellulosic fibres, glass fibres or asbestos fibres may be made using the copolymers.
