Abstract
Moulding compositions comprise a polyhydric alcohol polyester of an olefine a-b-dicarboxylic acid and a polymerizable a-substituted ethylene compound of the formula CH2=CR1R2 miscible therewith. R1 is an acyl, aryl, carboxyl, halogeno, acyloxy, carbalkoxy, alkoxy, aldehydo, or nitrilo group, and R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl group. Preferred compositions comprise a vinyl ester, an acrylic or methacrylic ester, styrene, or a vinyl ketone together with a polyester from a dihydric alcohol (e.g. mono-, di-, or triethyleneglycol, 1 : 2- or 1 : 3-propyleneglycol, monoethylin, or mixtures thereof) and maleic, fumaric, citraconic, or itaconic acid; part of the acid may be replaced by phthalic or succinic acid. There may also be incorporated catalysts, e.g. per-compounds such as benzoyl, acetyl, acetyl-benzoyl, and phthalyl peroxides; fillers, e.g. cellulose, asbestos, chalk, ground glass, barytes; dyes, pigments, and plasticizers. Air and oxygen may be used as catalysts. The products may be used for moulding, e.g. by injection, or for impregnation, e.g. of cloth and paper. In examples: (1) diethylene glycol and maleic acid are condensed in illuminating gas, and the product mixed with vinyl acetate and benzoyl peroxide with or without a-cellulose flock; (2) diethyleneglycol and maleic acid are condensed in carbon monoxide, the product mixed with vinyl acetate and benzoyl peroxide, and moulded into knife handles; (3) triethyleneglycol and maleic anhydride are condensed in carbon monoxide, and the product mixed with vinyl acetate, benzoyl peroxide, and a-cellulose flock; (4), (5) ethyleneglycol and (4) maleic anhydride or (5) fumaric acid are condensed in carbon dioxide, and the products mixed with vinyl acetate and benzoyl peroxide; (6) propyleneglycol and maleic anhydride are condensed in carbon dioxide and the product mixed with vinyl acetate and benzoyl peroxide; (7)-(9) diethyleneglycol maleate polyester is mixed with benzoyl peroxide and (7) styrene, (8) methyl acrylate, (9) methyl methacrylate; (10) diethyleneglycol maleate polyester is dissolved in isopropenyl methyl ketone; (11) paper or canvas is soaked in a mixture of diethyleneglycol maleate polyester, vinyl acetate, and benzoyl peroxide, and then laminated by heat and pressure.
