Abstract

A polymerizable composition comprises (1) an unsaturated alkyd resin prepared by reacting one or more unsaturated dibasic acids, e.g. maleic, fumaric, citraconic, mesaconic, itaconic, or mixtures thereof with a mixture of a low molecular weight glycol, e.g. ethylene, diethylene, propylene or dipropylene glycol, and 2.5 to 25 mols. per cent of an octadecanediol, e.g. 1,10-, 1,12- and 1,18-octadecane-diols mixed with (2) a polymerizable ethylenic compound, e.g. styrene, vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, diallyl succinate or phthalate. The composition may include fillers and is copolymerized using a catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, heat, or ultra-violet light. In examples an alkyd resin prepared from diethylene glycol 1,12-octadecandiol and maleic anhydride by heating to an acid value of 30, is mixed with (1) styrene and a quinol inhibitor, and (11) styrene and diallyl succinate. The products are polymerized with benzoyl peroxide to give cast rods or moulded products, or the composition of example (1) with a benzoyl peroxide catalyst may be used to roller-coat glass cloth which may be laminated, and cured by heat and pressure.
