Abstract
Partial copolyesterification with a polyhydric alcohol of a mixture of isomeric phthalic acids under an atmosphere of an inert gas is interrupted when the amount of water produced indicates that all of the isomers other than terephthalic acid have been esterified, the polyester separated by filtration from the residual terephthalic acid and further polycondensation is preferably effected. The polyhydric alcohol may be dihydric, in which case the further polycondensation gives (a) a saturated copolyester, using optionally a fatty acid or (b) an unsaturated copolyester, using maleic and/or fumaric acid and optionally a saturated acid followed by reaction with a cross-linking monomer. The further condensation in case (b) may be carried out in presence of the same or a different dihydric alcohol. Alternatively, where the polyhydric alcohol is trihydric, the separated product may be further condensed with one or more saturated and/or unsaturated monocarboxylic fatty acids to obtain a copolyester resin, e.g. a glycerophthalate when glycerol is used. In Examples:- (1) and (2) the partially copolyesterified product from iso- and tere-phthalic acids and propane-1:2-diol was further reacted with propane-1:2-diol and maleic acid or anhydride and the product was polymerized with added styrene; (3) as in (2), the starting material containing also orthophthalic acid; (4) as in (2) except that in the first stage ethylene glycol was used instead of the propanediol; (5) as in (2) the starting material being ortho- and tere-phthalic acids; (6) the partially copolyesterified product from iso- and tere-phthalic acids and propane-1:2-diol was further reacted in presence of adipic acid; (7) the intermediate from ortho- and tere-phthalic acids and glycerol was further reacted with linseed oil acids.ALSO:Pure terephthalic acid is isolated from a mixture with at least one of the other phthalic acids by partial copolyesterification p with a polyhydric alcohol under an atmosphere of an inert gas, stopping the reaction when the amount of water produced indicates that all of the isomeric acids other than terephthalic have been esterified and then separating by filtration the residual terephthalic acid from the esterified product.
