Abstract
881,866. Cable joints. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES Ltd. March 21, 1958 [March 21, 1957; Jan. 14, 1958], Nos. 9339/57 and 1348/58. Class 38 (1). Continuity of the core screens 3 of cable cores joined by a " weak-back " copper ferrule 6 is obtained by securing thereto the ends of a metal screening member 11 which fits round the outside of a pre-formed insulating tube 8 enclosing the joint and is secured to the screens 3 by a binding of antimonial lead, or other soft wire 21 covered by solder 22. The member 11 may be made of a rectangle of preferably mixed sheet copper wrapped round tube 8 so that its edges overlap and can be spot welded or soldered together at 17 and provided at its ends with fingers 13. The spaces between the fingers permit a cold setting insulating compound poured in through aperture 32 in casing 23 to enter and fill tube 8 a vent 24 providing the air outlet. Alternatively, the screening member 11 may be a flexible metal tube 26 (Fig. 4) made by braiding together a number of elements 27, each of which consists of a group of parallel wires which may be of small diameter and are preferably of turned copper. Tube 26 is brought into contact with tube 8 which it surrounds by pulling it on longitudinally. The joint sleeve 6, the adjacent cut-back core insulation and the core insulation adjacent the cut-back ends of the screens 3 are provided with wrappings of tape 7, 18 and the joint is held in the tube 8 by an arcuate spacing member 9 secured by tape 10. The screening members 11 or 26 on the three cores are held in contact with one another by tapes 25.
