Abstract
1280439 Cable terminations STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 8 March 1971 6241/71 Heading H2E A method of terminating a submarine coaxial cable 1 having an aluminium outer conductor 9 into a repeater housing comprises joining the aluminium outer conductor 9 to the outer conductor 25 of a repeater tail cable 23 by a flexible braid sheath 15 and a copper conductor 29, fitting a water barrier assembly to the inner insulation 8 of the submarine cable and joining it to the copper conductor 29, and connecting the inner conductor 7 of the submarine cable to the inner conductor of the repeater tail cable 24 via an anchor assembly which includes a housing 3 for supporting the mechanical tension in the core 6 of submarine cable. The sheath 10 and outer conductor 9 are stripped from the end of the submarine cable and a buffer assembly 2 is fitted comprising a moulded rubber portion 2a and a zine anode portion 2b, together with the anchor housing 3, a gimbal ring 4, the spun copper conductor 29, a heatshrinkable tube 41 and a plastics sheath 5. An anchor tube 19, body 20, a nose 21 and an anchor ceramic 22 are assembled, the nose 21 is brazed to the inner conductor 24 of the tail cable 23 and dielectric 28 is bonded to the tail cable dielectric 26 and the ceramic 22. The outer conductor 9 is connected by jumper tapes 18a, 18b, 18c to a split aluminium sleeve 12 which overlaps and is spot welded to one end of a copper sleeve 14, there being a zinc sleeve over the overlap and a tinned copper flexible braid sheath 15 soldered to the other end of sleeve 14; the sheath 15 is connected to a grooved and castellated barrier tube 11 which is joined by brazed tabs 37 to the conductor 29. The strands of the core 6 are splayed-out inside the anchor body 20 which is then filled with resin. The sheath 5 is sealed to the cablesheath 10 at 32 and retained by a ateel wire 33. Dielectric 34 is moulded to link dielectric 28 with the cable insulation 8, and the conductor 29 is connected to the tail cable outer conductor 25 via a copper cover 38 and sleeve 39. Heat shrinkable tubes 41, 40 are applied around the dielectric 34 and tail cable end respectively. The anchor housing 3 is keyed to the dielectric 28 by locking members 43 and is attached to the gimbal ring 4 by pins 44, the ring being connected to an outer ring 49 on the repeater housing.
