Abstract
In the production of a grid electrode for an electron tube, a metal wire is pulled through a melt consisting wholly or partly of aluminium in a protective gas atmosphere and is afterwards heated to produce a dark-grey coating thereon. The grid may be formed either before or after the heat treatment of the wire which may consist of heating to between 600 DEG and 800 DEG C. for 5 to 10 minutes (preferably in vacuo) and may be effected after the grid is mounted in the electron tube. Preferably the melt contains 5 to 60%, e.g. 20%, by weight of magnesium which ensures that the coating adheres strongly to the wire. Alternatively the magnesium may be replaced with a small amount of silicon or titanium. The coating is found to contain aluminium, and magnesium if it is used, in the form of alloys and/or compounds with the material of the wire, e.g. molybdenum or possibly tungsten or nickel.
