Abstract

In the manufacture of the water-cooled mercury arc rectifier described in Specification 817,504 [Group XL(a)], the components comprising the cylindrical mild steel envelope and the cathode assembly are assembled together and a nickel-chromium brazing alloy applied in the form of a suspension which is painted around the joints and over the whole of the outer surface of the envelope and over any other part which would be exposed to attack by the cooling water. The assembled components are then placed in a furnace which is evacuated and heated to a temperature of 1100 DEG C. long enough for the joints to be securely brazed and for the brazing composition to alloy with the mild steel of the envelope over the whole of the outer surface of the latter, the alloy thus formed being diffused within the wall of the envelope to a depth less than the thickness of the wall. The treated surface of the steel envelope has the appearanc of stainless steel, is substantially rustproof, and the porosity of the envelope to atomic hydrogen is greatly reduced. It is stated in the Provisional Specification that the technique may be applied to other evacuated metal containers and to mild steel surfaces in general.
