Abstract

881,672. Spraying fusible materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 29, 1959 [Dec. 31, 1958], No. 44090/59. Class 69 (3). Electric arc spraying apparatus comprises a nozzle electrode 12 and a guide electrode 16 providing opposed surfaces 12c, 16a between which an arc is established, and the material to be sprayed from the orifice 14 of the electrode 12 is fed in the form of a rod 30 through the electrode 16 into the arc, and is sprayed by gas or vapour under pressure supplied to the space 17 between the electrodes via a tube 17a. A baffle plate 20c uniformly distributes the gas &c. to the space. The electrodes are adjustably connected to the main body 20 to which coolant is supplied through a tube 20a. The nozzle 12, provided with a coolant passage 26, has a surface 12b diverging from the orifice 14 to meet a flat surface 12a at right angles to the nozzle axis; it is alleged that such an arrangement prevents ambient air from being drawn inwards towards the orifice and the spray stream. In a modification the electrode 12 is in two parts and includes a removable insert provided with the surfaces 12a, 12b and 12c; the rod is pushed into contact with the guide electrode by a spring-urged ball bearing. The electrode 12 may have cooling fins.
