995,656. Spray-producers. LES FORGES DE ZEEBRUGGE S.A. July 9, 1962 [May 4, 1962], No. 26352/62. Heading B2F. Spray means for delivering a stream of atomized liquid in a carrier gas comprises an inner member 10 containing a centrally and longitudinally disposed tube 7 adapted to deliver liquid and having a delivery nozzle 8 with a frusto-conical outer surface 9 ; a plurality of tubes 11 arranged longitudinally and peripherally of the centrally disposed tube, and adapted to deliver atomizing gas ; and an outer member 1, 2 enclosing the central and peripheral tubes, the internal surface of the outer member being shaped to provide (a) a deflecting surface 3 to direct the atomizing gases from the peripherally disposed tubes towards the nozzle 8 of the central tube, (b) a frusto-conical surface 4 extending from behind to in front of the nozzle and having an angle greater than the angle of the frusto-conical configuration of the outer surface of the nozzle, and (c) a parallel-sided tube 5 to deliver an atomized stream of liquid or gas. The liquid, e.g. a mixture of soap and water, is fed through a flexible pipe 22, connector 21 and a passage 19 in a body 1 to an annular space 18 and thence through a transverse duct 17 to the tube 7, and through a smaller axial duct leading to the orifice of the nozzle 8. Compressed air is admitted through a flexible pipe 25, connector 24 and channel 23 to an annular space 15; thence through the tubes 11 to a conical chamber 14, where the air streams mix ; thence to a space between the conical surface 4 and the conical surface 9, and thence to a chamber 12, where it mixes with the liquid and issues therewith as a cooling spray from the orifice 5. The body 1 is joined to a flexible pipe conduit 30 by two half shells 31 (not shown) and 32, held together by a screw 33 and suitably flanged at 36, 37, the space thus enclosed housing the connectors 21, 24. The nozzle member 2 screws on to a threaded projection 16 from the element 10 and its axial position is thereby adjustable. In one extreme position, Fig. 3, the air passage round the surface 9 is widened to such an extent that the flow of air is not accelerated and has no suction effect on the liquid in the nozzle 8. In the other extreme position, Fig. 1, the nozzle 8 blocks the channel and there is no flow of air or liquid. In intermediate positions, Fig. 2, the narrowness of the air passage governs the acceleration of the air and its suction effect on the liquid and the cooling spray can thus be varied between a fine mist and air with a high content of liquid droplets. In the Fig. 3 position there is a back pressure of air which can be used to clean the nozzle 8. In a modification. Fig. 13, the body 1 is of L form, the air and liquid inlets being perpendicular to the axis of the nozzle, and the air passage is altered by moving the element 10 (the member 2 being fixed), this being accomplished by means of a screw threaded extension 71 with an operating knob 73. The L formation may also be used with an adjustable nozzle member 2. In another modification the air and liquid inlets may enter sideways into the straight-through formation and the rear of the housing 31, 32 may be fixed to one jaw of a clamp, whereby the apparatus may be disposed so that the nozzle points in any desired direction. A liquid container may be secured to the base of the clamp.
