In the CO 2 process for the production of shaped refractory bodies such as foundry moulds or cores, a compact mass of a substance capable of decomposing to form a gas at the working temperature is introduced into the body. The gas-forming substance may be ammonium chloride in tablet form which may be coated with a fusible substance such as shallac or polyethylene, placed in the refractory mix or in the shaped body before or after gassing. Other examples are oxalic acid and alkali or alkaline earth metal salts of oxalic and formic acids, polystyrene &c
