Abstract
A coating of a plastic is applied to a metal surface by knurling the metal surface, deforming the apices of the resulting projections by pressure so as to cause the projections to assume an undercut form, and then applying the plastic as a coating. The invention is described as applied to an aluminium alloy piston, part of the cylindrical surface of which is knurled, a hardened roller being then applied to the resulting projections. It is then placed on an axle, and a piece of steel is fitted within the piston skirt to act as a heat reservoir. After heating to 330 DEG C., the piston is rolled over a bed of nylon powder, which is then sintered. A second layer of nylon may be applied to provide a thicker coating than finally required, the excess then being removed by machining.
