881,166. Control systems for train heating apparatus. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. March 3, 1959 [March 6, 1958], No. 7321/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (4). A control system for train heating apparatus comprising heating units in each carriage of the train has a single control panel at the guard's position by means of which all the heating units in the train can be similarly simultaneously controlled by the guard, each heating unit having associated therewith a local control panel situated in the carriage so that each heating unit may be controlled by its associated local control panel without affecting any of the heating units situated in other carriages of the train. The heating units are of the type in which air is circulated by a fan through a flame heated heat exchanger, the flame being derived by liquid fuel supplied by a pump through a solenoid operated valve, the fuel being ignited electrically. Thermostats are provided to control the temperature of the carriages and further thermostats are provided to prevent the heating exchangers from developing excess heat. Thermostats are also provided to detect the presence of a flame in the heat exchangers whereupon the igniter circuits are de-energized. Each control panel is provided with indicators to indicate operation of the heater units. The system includes unidirectionally conducting devices to prevent interaction between the various control circuits and a plurality of camoperated micro-switches, the cams being driven by an electric motor. A number of relays and control switches are also included in the system. Change-over switches are provided whereby the system may operate to allow ventilation to be obtained instead of heating.
