Abstract
692,910. Automatic temperature-control systems. VAPOR HEATING CORPORATION. Oct. 9, 1951 [Oct. 17, 1950], No. 23498/51. Class 38 (iv). [Also in Group XIII] A heating system for a railway-coach comprises a heater 17 supplying main radiators 23 arranged in the coach and thermostats 70, 31, 34, responsive to the temperature within the coach for controlling the operation of the heater and for introducing auxiliary radiators 32 in parallel with the main radiators to augment the heating at particular points. The heater has a burner 54 supplied with fuel-oil through a solenoid-actuated valve 57. The burner is supplied with air by a blower 58 and the ignition is provided by a sparking-plug 59 from a rotary-converter 66 driven by a motor 62 also driving the blower. The heater 17 is arranged in a compartment 15 and supplies hot fluid to a hot-air blower 43 which passes air into the coach through an overhead duct 41, the air being drawn out of the coach for recirculation through louvres 44, 47. A masterthermostat 70 is mounted in the duct and cuts out the heater if the air temperature exceeds 72 F. A further thermostat 82 controls the temperature of the circulating liquid between the limits 160 and 180 F., by operating on the heater. The electrical circuit is shown in Fig. 3. The fuel valve 57 and motor 62 are controlled by a relay 71, the solenoid 72 of which is short-circuited by the mercurycolumn 83 of the thermostat 70 when the airtemperature exceeds 72 F. To obviate thermal-lag in the operation of the thermostat, an additional heater-circuit 89, 91, 92, 93 is connected to it to supply a rise in the mercurycolumn equivalent to 2 F. at approximately the operating temperature. The thermostats 31 and 34 comprise valves, at the junctions of the main and auxiliary radiators, operated by relays 96 and 116 similar to the relay 71.
