880,328. Laminates; seaming non-metallic sheet material. HERMORION Ltd. Dec. 24, 1959 [Jan. 8, 1959], No. 43933/59. Classes 42 (1) and 140. [Also in Groups XVII and XXVIII] A laminated material in web form for making heat-sealed packages comprises a heat-sealable plastic layer 2 and a paper or other base layer 1 having a depression 7 of triangular or arcuate section along the length of the web and close to, but not extending to, one edge 3. The depression 7 is formed by grinding or pressing the pre-formed web. In making a package the web is formed into a cylinder, plastic material inward, by bringing the edges (beyond the lines P1, P2) of the material 2 into face-to-face contact, heat-sealing, and folding the seamed portion so formed back over the backing 1, the thinned portion at 7 comprising the inner part of the fold. Alternatively, the edges may be folded back before heat-sealing. The seam may be longitudinal, or the web may be wound helically, the seam then also being helical.
