Abstract
880,195. Cigarette-making machines. SCHMERMUND, A. March 7, 1960 [March 16, 1959], No. 7959/60. Class 130. [Also in Group XXX] A uniform tobacco stream in a continuous rod machine is formed by depositing cut tobacco on a carrier by electrostatic precipitation. The cut tobacco is fed into a vibrating trough 2 from which it is fed into a narrower vibrating channel 18 between which and a conveyer band 40 an electrostatic field is set up to cause the tobacco particles to transfer to the band 40. The tobacco is subsequently discharged on to a second band 30 carrying the cigarette paper 33. The field may be set up by maintaining the channel 18 at a high voltage, e.g. 2000-8000 V., and an electrode 15 above the band 40 at earth potential, a second electrode 32 being maintained at such a potential to neutralize the charge on the tobacco particles to cause them to drop off the band 40 on to the band 30. As shown, however, the channel 18 and electrode 15 are at earth potential and the electrostatic field is set up by a grid 37 at high potential. The trough 2 and channel 18 are carried by springs 6, 19, mounted on insulators 41, 20, and are vibrated by electromagnets 3, 21. The distance between the channel 18 and band 40 may be adjustable and a photo-electric device 26 detects the level of tobacco in the channel and adjusts the tobacco feed accordingly. The discharging electrode 32 may be replaced by other means for neutralizing the charge such as a high-frequency field or radioactive means.
