Abstract

A method of applying a fusible pulverulent coating material to the surface of an article, where either the article or the coating material is susceptible to deterioration as a result of heat, comprises rapidly heating the surface to above said deterioration temperature, such heating being limited in time so that the interior of said article remains at a temperature at least 20 DEG F. lower than the surface temperature, immersing the heated article in a fluidised bed of coating material to form a layer, and permitting the layer to coalesce. The coated article may be re-heated to fuse the coating. The process may be applied to copper and its alloys such as brass, iron and steel, magnesium, zinc, aluminium, wood, paper, paperboard, cotton, woven textiles, and plastics, which may be reinforced e.g. with fibreglass. Suitable coating materials include vinyl resins, nylon, polystyrene, epoxy resins, cellulose esters, silicones, bitumen or asphalt, shellac, wax, zinc, lead, porcelain and glass or mixtures thereof. A priming coat of a substance which is liable to deterioration as a result of heat, e.g. a composition containing vinyl resins and alkylated methylol phenols may be applied: a consequence of the rapid heating is that curing of the primer does not take place before the final coating is applied. Specification 759,214 is referred to.ALSO:A method of applying a metal coating to the surface of an article, where either the article or the coating material is susceptible to deterioration as a result of heat, comprises rapidly heating the surface to above said deterioration temperature, such heating being limited in time so that the interior of said article remains at a temperature at least 20 DEG F. lower than the surface temperature, immersing the heated article in a fluidized bed of coating metal to form a layer, and permitting the layer to coalesce. The coated article may be reheated to fuse the coating. The process may be applied to copper and its alloy such as a brass, iron and steel, magnesium, zinc, aluminium, wood, paper, paperboard, cotton, woven textiles, and plastics, which may be reinforced, e.g. with fibreglass. Suitable coating materials include zinc and lead, or mixtures thereof. A priming coat of a substance which is liable to deterioration as a result of heat, e.g. a composition containing vinyl resins and alkylated methylol phenols may be applied: a consequence of the rapid heating is that curing of the primer does not take place before the final coating is applied.
