Abstract
Moisture-resistant coatings are formed on a surface such as that of a closed coil by applying to the surface an impregnating coating consisting of a polymerizable resin varnish, drying and baking until the varnish is fully cured, then applying a coating of a polymerizable resin varnish containing a suitable amount of a finely-divided inert inorganic filler and then drying and baking for a time and at a temperature sufficient to solidify the resin but insufficient to cure completely the resin in the final coating. In an example a transformer is dried by baking in a vacuum and maintained under a vacuum in a tank whilst cooling. A polymerizable varnish is then drawn into the tank to cover completely the transformer while still maintaining the vacuum, the vacuum broken after a few minutes and the transformer kept immersed for some time (e.g. 45 minutes), removed, dried and drained, then baked and cooled after which the impregnating, baking and cooling is repeated. The impregnated transformer is then given two coatings of a polymerizable varnish containing finely-divided talc by immersion, draining, air-drying and baking. It is preferred that the same varnish is used both for impregnating and coating, a preferred varnish being the condensation product of formaldehyde and cashew nut shell oil in petroleum naphtha. Instead of talc, sand, mica, asbestos, aluminium silicate and chalk may be used. Preferred proportions of talc are 80 to 90 per cent of the weight of the solid content of the varnish. The impregnating coating is preferably baked at 190 DEG F. for 5 hours or at 180 DEG F. for 8 hours or at 210 DEG F. for 4 hours and the final coating preferably baked at 190 DEG F. for 12 hours or at 180 DEG F. for 15 hours or at 210 DEG F. for 10 hours.
