Abstract

Epoxy resins cross-linked with low-molecular-weight polyamides, dicyandiamide, ethylene diamine or diethylene diamine, or modified with liquid polysulphide polymers are applied to surfaces by the fluidized-bed process in which the heated surface is contacted with a bed of particles of the resin fluidized by an ascending stream of gas. When certain polyamides are used, cross-linking may proceed if the surface is cooled immediately after coating and kept for a period at room temperature; otherwise the coating may be further heated in an oven. Examples of coating compositions include (1) epoxy resin (bis-phenol A/epichlorhydrin), and dicyandiamide for application to steel plates (2), (3), (4), epoxy resin and dicyandiamide for application to aluminium rods, (5) epoxy resin, aluminium oxide filler as an abrasive and dicyandiamide for application to steel plates, and (9) epoxy resin and polyamide (polymerized dilinoleic acid/ethylene diamine) for application to aluminium rods. In Example (10) an aluminium rod is coated with a composition comprising 500 parts of a phenol-formaldehyde resin, 10 parts of silica and 1 part of a silicone resin. Specification 807,238 also is referred to.ALSO:Articles are coated with a coherent layer of thermosetting material by heating the article to a temperature above the softening point of the material, contacting it with a bed of the said material fluidised by an ascending current of gas, and then curing the coating. Suitable coating materials are phenolformaldehyde resins, urea - formaldehyde resins, unsaturated polyester resins, alkyd resins, melamine-formaldehyde resins, epoxy resins, and silicone resins, which may contain high melting-point fillers such as asbestos, slate, metal powders, pigments or abrasives; curing agents; thermoplastic resins e.g. cellulose acetate sulphate; or liquid polysulphide polymers. A top coat of a thermoplastic material e.g. a polyamide may be applied while the thermosetting coating is still in a fused state so that mixing occurs. The method is suitable for coating articles of iron, steel, aluminium, magnesium, copper, zinc, alloys thereof, glass, ceramics and wood. The surfaces may be roughened e.g. by shot-blasting before application. Examples are given of powdered coating compositions containing epoxy resin and dicyandiamide; epoxy resin, dicyandiamide and aluminium oxide; silicone resin; epoxy resin and polyamide; and phenolformaldehyde resin, silica, and silicone resin. The article may be heated to a higher temperature after coating in order to cure the resin. Articles which may be coated include hand-tools, tubular sleeves, hooks, clamps, plating racks, anode hangers, ventilators, gears, pump housings, sieves, screens, switches, electrical fittings, tanks, protective caps, bushings, bellows, fan blades and guards. Examples describe coating plates and rods. Specification 807,238 also is referred to.
