Abstract
Compositions for application to fibre-glass reinforced plastics articles comprise (Example 2) a partially reacted mixture of 50 parts by weight of a liquid epoxy resin, 50 parts by weight of a solid epoxy resin and 15 parts by weight of a modified phenylene diamine curing agent; (Example 4) a mixture of 100 parts of epoxy resin, 20 parts of polyamide, and 8 parts of dicyandiamide. In both cases the compositions are in pulverulent form and the particle sizes are specified.ALSO:Glass-fibre-reinforced plastic articles having rough surfaces caused by protruding glass strands are coated with a compatible plastic by immersion in a fluidised bed thereof while heated to a temperature above the sintering point of the coating material and holding the articles therein until coated by fusion of the coating material particles thereon, and until the coating is sufficiently thick to hide the protruding glass strands. The fluidisation may be brought about by an ascending current of gas; the gas and the coating material may be pre-heated to a temperature approaching but not exceeding the sintering point of the coating material. The coated article may be subsequently heated to fuse and/or cure the coating, and the steps of dipping and heating may be repeated several times. Suitable coating materials include cellulose acetate butyrate, ethyl cellulose, polyethylene, polyamides, epoxy resins, epoxy-phenolic resins, silicone resins, and mixtures thereof, which may contain fillers or pigments. In examples, a tube, a copper coil wound on a former, and chair bodies are coated.
