Abstract

1,139,922. Foamed plastics coatings. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 1 Feb., 1966 [2 Feb., 1965], No. 35171/68. Divided out of 1,139.921. Heading B2K. A foamed plastics coating is produced on an object by heating the object and immersing the heated object in a fluidised bed of a mixture of a powdered foamable plastics and a finely divided agent that is sublimatable. The plastics maybe a synthetic thermoplastic material e.g. a polyolefin such as polyethylene, polypropylene or polybutadiene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, a polyamide, a polyurethane, cellulose acetobutyrate, or a mixture of two or more thereof and/or a copolymer and/or graft polymer of one of the thermoplastics; or a synthetic thermosetting material e.g. a polyepoxide, a phenolformaldehyde, a urea-formaldehyde, a melamine resin, a silicone, an isocyanate-polyester or isocyanate-polyether, or a mixture of two or more thereof and/or a copolymer and/or graft polymer of one of the thermosetting materials, if desired with a hardener and/or cross linking agent. The agent which may be present in amount from 5 to 35% by wt. may be paraformaldehyde. The object may be of metal e.g. aluminium, or of an inorganic or organic material and only part e.g. one side only, may be coated. The object to be coated may be first provided with an undercoating of metal, inorganic or organic material. The plastics powder may contain a dye; pigment; metallic pigment; filler! extender; accelerator; agent for improving resistance to light or heat; plasticiser, glass or asbestos powder or inorganic fibres as a reinforcement, metal oxide, cement or other inorganic substance, or fire inhibiting agent. One or more coatings of plastics, metal and/or inorganic material is/are applied to the foamed plastics coating.
