Abstract
Interiorly cavitated pelleted sulphur, for use in gelatine dynamite (see Group XXI), consists of hollow beads of sulphur the interiors of which are air filled, and is prepared by spraying molten sulphur at a temperature as near the crystallization temperature as possible into air in fine droplets and solidifying the droplets in flight. The pelleted sulphur may be water-proofed by coating with microcrystalline wax, with or without a subsequent clay covering, with thermo-plastic film-forming resins, or with condensation products of formaldehyde with urea or melamine, such as dimethylol urea, partially polymerized urea-formaldehyde, melamineformaldehyde, or urea-melamine-formaldehyde condensation products. Thus, sulphur pellets heated to 150 DEG F may be coated with a dispersion of the thermo-setting resin, containing ammonium chloride as curing catalyst, in water and the resin rendered infusible and insoluble.
