Abstract
In a process for the production of fire-retardant fillers capable of forming foam layers at elevated temperatures the following substances are reacted in aqueous solution in the proportions stated: 10 to 20 parts by weight of dicyandiamide, 1 to 15 parts by weight of urea, 40 to 80 parts by weight of 30% formaldehyde solution, 10 to 30 parts by weight of monoammonium phosphate, 1 to 3 parts by weight of lactic acid and 1 to 10 parts by weight of dextrin, the filler being recovered by drying the solution. The first five ingredients may be first reacted together in aqueous solution and the dextrin is then subsequently added. After spray drying the product has a particle size of 1 to 20m . The fillers can be incorporated in coating compositions containing phenol-formaldehyde resins, urea and melamine resins, epoxy resins, polyvinyl acetate or cyclized or chlorinated rubber, together with pigments. The fillers can also be incorporated in fibre board or chip board, the filler being incorporated in the glue or adhesive. A polyvinyl acetate emulsion incorporating the fillers is also used for impregnating wool, cotton or materials from synthetic fibres. Examples describe the preparation of such a filler and its incorporation with (1) mixed phenol-formaldehyde and urea-formaldehyde resins; (3) a methyl ether of a urea formaldehyde resin; (4) chlorinated diphenyl, chlorinated rubber and thinners; (5) polyvinyl acetate emulsion; (6) and (7) liquid epoxy resin and a cycloaliphatic amine; (8) urea-formaldehyde resin moulding powder; (9) wood chip board, the filler being added to the urea-formaldehyde glue.
