Abstract

1276376 Coating glass fibres FIBREGLASS Ltd and R J ASHALL 20 Oct 1970 [30 Oct 1969 2 Dec 1969] 53293/69 and 58887/69 Heading D1P A method of producing coated glass fibres in which the fibres are coated with a tri-cresyl phosphate or a tri-xylenyl phosphate. The trixylenyl phosphate should preferably be freed by fractionation from harmful components, ortho-cresol, ortho-ethyl phenol and orthopropyl phenol. The coating material may be sprayed in the form of an emulsion, which also contains an alkyl phenol poly glycol as a wetting agent and a complex sulphonated emulsifier, also a coating material such as a tripolymer resin and dicyandiamide. The tripolymer resin is preferably a phenol/melamine/urea formaldehyde resin. The phosphate component of the coating material may be present in an amount from 1 to 50% by weight of solids content of the coating material. The coating material acting as a binder may comprise, weight for weight, 45% tripolymer resin, 18.5% dicyandiamide, 36% non-toxic phosphate component and 0.5% additive material. One method of producing glass wool sized with from 1.5 to 2.0% by weight of coating material is to allow glass fibres formed at a spinning head to fall on a conveyor as a mat and spray them as they fall with an emulsion of the respective phosphate, then heat the mat to dry the size.
