Abstract

Moulding compositions are prepared by mixing a partially polymerized aqueous solution of urea and formaldehyde (i.e. one which has a free formaldehyde content of less than 5%), with non-fibrous cellulosic flakes or trimmings preferably in the resin/filler ratio range of 55/45 to 45/55, heating the mixture to further polymerize the urea and formaldehyde while at the same time coating the cellulosic flakes or trimmings with the solution, heating the resulting mass to produce a dried product having a higher degree of urea-formaldehyde polymerization and a pH of about 6, cutting the product into granules and mixing the granular mass with a latent acidic catalyst and a lubricant. The product has an apparent density of 0,55-0,7 gms. per c.c. Cellulosic fillers specified are regenerated cellulose and hydroxyethyl cellulose, and the urea-formaldehyde solution used contains 1-2 moles of formaldehyde to 1 mole of urea. As catalysts may be used ammonium compounds which release acid at elevated temperatures and organic acid anhydrides.
