Abstract

A moulding composition comprises (a) 60-70 parts by weight of a thermosetting resin precondensate and(b) 30-40 parts of a filler comprising 10-50 parts by weight of alphacellulose and 50-90 parts by weight of regenerated cellulose or a water-insoluble, alkali-soluble cellulose ether. Specified resins are the reaction product of an aldehyde (e.g. formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde or furfuraldehyde) with urea, thiourea, aminotriazines (e.g. melamine), the products obtained by heating and decomposing dicyandiamide, and phenol. Mixed resins, e.g. urea-melamine-formaldehyde resins and urea-thiourea-formaldehyde resins may also be used. Specified cellulose ethers are alkyl ethers, carboxyalkyl ethers, hydroxyalkyl ethers, mixed alkyl and hydroxyalkyl ethers, mixed alkyl and carboxyalkyl ethers, and the salts of carboxyalkyl ethers which contain free hydroxyl groups. The regenerated cellulose may be regenerated from viscose or nitrocellulose and may be dyed or pigmented. The moulding composition may contain minor proportions of wood flour, asbestos, cotton linters, colouring materials, pigments, dyes, lubricants, plasticizing and impregnating agents, curing catalysts, starches, gums, alginates or casein. In examples: (1) urea, formalin, hexamethylene tetramine, ammonium benzoate, chipped regenerated cellulose and alpha-cellulose are mixed below 45 DEG C. and the mixture dried at 60-80 DEG C. It is then ground and may be mixed with zinc stearate, colouring materials or curing catalysts; (2) a water-soluble reaction product of melamine and formaldehyde, a water-soluble reaction product of urea and formaldehyde, regenerated cellulose and alphacellulose were mixed and dried as in example (1).
