Abstract
A process for reducing metal oxides to finely-divided metal comprises introducing a metal oxide powder into a detonatable mixture of oxygen and fuel having detonation characteristics as defined such that the oxide is reduced to metal, igniting the mixture to produce a detonation wave and associated hot gases which react with the oxide to produce the metal and propel it towards a collecting means, to be recovered. A detonation gun may be used. The mixture (1) may be acetylene and oxygen the oxide (2) a tungsten oxide and the product (3) may contain tungsten, or one can have (1) propane and oxygen, (2) ferric oxide or magnetic iron oxide and (3) iron, or (1) acetylene and oxygen, (2) molybdenum oxide and molybdenum or (1) acetylene and oxygen, (2) a cobalt oxide and (3) cobalt. The metal may be impinged on an object to form a coating. Specification 742,387, 742,458, 742,459 and 742,460 are referred to.
