Abstract

Finely divided metal oxides (the term "metal" includes silicon) are produced by introducing a metal powder or a volatilizable metal compound into a detonable charge comprising an oxygen/fuel mixture which produces an oxidizing atmosphere on detonation, and igniting to produce a detonation wave whereby the oxides produced are carried towards a collecting means where they may be recovered as such or as a coating on a target surface. Purging of the reaction chamber is effected by a combination of shock waves and the intermittent non-ignited oxidant/fuel mixture flow. In the case of titanium, magnesium and aluminium, the finely divided metal in combination with oxygen may form the detonable charge. According to Examples, (1) finely divided aluminium contained in a nitrogen carrier gas was mixed with an oxygen-acetylene mixture and introduced into a detonation chamber, where it was sparked at 4 times per second. Finely divided alumina was collected in an enlarged collecting zone or on a target surface. A silica may be produced from silicon powder by a similar method. (4) Silicon tetrachloride was mixed with an oxygen-acetylene detonable charge and subjected to detonation to produce a silica having a surface area of 107 sq. meters per gram. Further Examples relate to the use of a mixture of silicon tetrachloride and hexamethyldiethoxy silane and a mixture of silicon powder and dimethyldiethoxy silane to produce finely divided silica. Specification 742,458 is referred to.
