Abstract

879,266. Coke-oven doors. SIMON-CARVES Ltd. Nov. 12, 1959 [Dec. 9, 1958], No. 39692/58. Class 55 (1). An automatic locking device for coke-oven doors comprises a locking bar on the door having its opposite ends protruding beyond portions of the periphery of the door the locking bar being slidable in directions perpendicular to the major plane thereof, the opposite ends each being adapted to be engaged behind a locking hook secured to, or adjacent the frame of the door and to be urged into locking engagement with the locking hooks by resilient means normally urging the locking bar away from the door, a releasing member slidable on the door in a plane substantially parallel with the vertical edges of the door and with the outer surface thereof and means of operatively associated with the releasing member to move the locking bar towards the door upon sliding movement of the releasing member vertically upwards relative thereto upon engagement with the releasing mechanism of the door lifting member of a door extractor. As shown in Figs. 1-4, a coke-oven door 2 may comprise a rectangular plate whose frame 4 encloses refractory plug 5. A locking bar 6 extending horizontally across the front of the door and engages behind hooks 7. Helical compression spring 8 may be located between rocking bar 6 and door 2 urging the latter towards frame 4. Locking bar 6 may be arranged to slide on pin 11 which is secured to the door 2 and extends perpendicularly therefrom. In addition to spring 8 a pressure plate 12 may be placed upon pin 11 and they may be secured thereupon by hollow nut 13. Plate 12 may have two opposite recessed portions 14 designed to receive the bifurcated short arms 15 of lever 16. Lever 16 may be centrally pivoted between ears of a plate 17 and a long arm 18 of lever 16 extends substantially horizontally towards door 2. The inner end of arm 18 rests on ledge 19 of a rectangular box-like slide 20 arranged to slide vertically and parallel to the planar surface of door 2 and is held in position by the vertical sides of a door-lifting hook 21 formed integrally with plate 17. Door 2 may be removed from the oven by bringing a conventional extractor mechanism into alignment and lowering its hook 24 into space 23 below flange 32 of slide 20. As hook 24 engages flange 32 slide 20 moves upwards so that its lower flange 19 upon which arm 18 of lever 16 is nesting causes the latter to rotate in a counter-clockwise direction (see Fig. 2). As a result bifurcated short arm 15 compresses the spring 8 and releases the pressure thereof on locking bar 6. Further upward movement of hook 24 causes door 2 to be lifted vertically and locking bar 6 is simultaneously lifted clear of hooks 7. In a modification (not shown) spring 8 is replaced by a corrugated flexible airchord or bellows. Specification 879,267 is referred to.
