2 Claims.
This invention relates to adjustable supports for curtainrods and has for an object the provision of a simple, efficient, economically manufactured device which can be attached to the sides of window frames for the purpose of adjusta'bly supporting the hooks to which curtainsupporting rods are attached whereby the householder 'may quickly and easily slide the members up'and dOWn to any desired positions with little time and effort.
Further and more specific objects, features, and advantages will more clearly appear from the detailed description hereinafter especially when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate a present preferred form which the invention may assume and which form part of the specification.
Briefly and generally speaking the invention has to do with a device to be placed on the sides of'window frame and it comprises at each side a rack plate, a cooperating slide plate associated therewith, a latch element on the slide plate automatically engaging teeth on the rack plate when the slide plate is moved in one direction to hold the slide plate in any position to which it has been moved by the hand of the operator. Simple finger manipulable means on the slide plate are connected to a releasing element on the device to cam the finger out of engagement with the teeth when it is desired to move the slide plate to another position in the opposite direction.
More particularly the rack plate is fastened to the window frame and has flanges at its sides which are embraced by the side edges of the slide plate so that they are slidably related in a Very simple manner. The latch element on the slide plate is preferably a simple spring fin ger attached thereto. The releasing element is a plate disposed loosely between the slide and the rack plates and having a cam slot through which the end of the latch finger projects to engage the teeth. A finger manipulable rod is connected to the releasing plate to move it in one direction when desired to cam the finger out of'engagement so that the slide plate can be moved in the opposite direction.
The present preferred form which the invention may assume is illustrated in the drawings of which,
Fig. 1 is a partial perspective view of the device;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of one element of the device mounted on the window frame, and partly broken away;
Fig. 3 is a, vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
The invention aims to provide slidable members on each side of a window frame which can be instantly adjustable to desired heights and receive the ends of a curtain supporting element. It also aims to permit the plates to be moved in one direction and latched in that position until a manipulable member is actuated to release the latch device whereby the slidable members can be moved in the other direction at will.
In the drawings there is shown the upper portion of a window frame ID, the side elements II of which receive elongated rack plates I2 which (see Fig. 4) are of U-shaped configuration with laterally extending flanges I3 and with a series of centrally disposed rack teeth M.
The rack plates I 2 are adapted to be associated with slide plates I5 which have inwardly turned edges I6 to embrace the flanges I3 and permit the plates I5 to be slid up and down on the rack plates I2. The bottom of the plates l5 are provided with outwardly turned fingers I? to permit easy manipulation of theplates I5. At the upper end of the plates I5 there are suitably mounted curtain-supporting hooks I8 which are adapted in the usual manner to receive the ends of a curtain-supporting rod I9.
The rack teeth on the plates I 2 may be formed out of the material of the plate itself or may be separately made and fastened in position as desired. In order to latch the slide plates I5 in any desired position each plate I5 is provided with a latch finger 20, preferably resilient which is fastened to the plate l5 near its upper end and has a free end pressing toward the rack teeth It to engage them. The disposition of the finger on the plate I5 and its relation to the teeth I4 is such that the plate I5 can be moved upward, during which time the finger will pass over the teeth I4, but the finger will prevent the plate I5 from moving downward unless the finger 20 is released. It will thus be obvious that each plate I5 can be pushed up by the finger of the operator engaging the finger pieces I1 to adjust the plates I5 to the desired height with respect to the frame of the window so as to dispose the curtain-supporting rod I9 at the desired height.
In order to lower the plates I5 when desired, it is necessary to pull down on a m'anipulable element such as another finger piece 2| extending through an opening 22 in the lower portion of the plate l5. This piece is at the lower end of a strip of metal 23 which lies back of the plate l and at its upper end connects in a suitable manner with a releasing plate 24. This plate 24 also lies back of plate l5 and moves freely up and down therein. Its upper end 25 is bent over to rest against the back of the plate IE to act as a bearing for the movement of the releasing plate 24. The plate 24 has near its lower portion a. slot 26 through which the end of the finger 20 extends (see Fig. 3). It is clear that if the releasing plate 24 is moved downwardly relative to the plate l5 then the end of the finger 20 will be cammed out of contact with the teeth of the rack plate and th slide plates l5 may be then moved downwardly at will. This release is effected by pulling down on the releasing finger piece 2| as seen. When the finger piece 2| is moved relatively upward again then the finger 20 will snap through the slot 26 into engagement with the teeth 14 on the rack plate I2. A
Upon consideration of the detailed description above it will be seen that the elements on each side of the window frame are duplicates of each other and that each consists essentially of a rack plate with which is associated a slide plate having a latch finger to engage the rack teeth to latch the slide plate against movement in one direction and that a manipulable device is mounted on the slide plate to cam the latch finger out of engagement with the rack teeth when it is desired to move the slide plate in the opposite direction.
While the invention has been described in detail and with respect to a present preferred form which the invention may assume, it is not to be limited to such details and forms since many changes and modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention in its broadest aspects. Hence it is desired to cover any and all forms and modifications of the invention which may come within the language or scope of any one or more of theappended claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In combination with the side frame of a window, a rack plate having rack teeth therealong and lateral flanges, a slide plate having overturned.- edges to embrace the flanges and slide along the rack plate, a curtain-supporting memher on said slide plate, a spring finger on the slide plate to engage the teeth of the rack plate and latch the slide plate from movement in one direction, a releasing plate disposed between the rack and slide plates and having a slot through which the end of the spring finger extends, and manipulable means on the slide plate and connected to the releasing plate to move it in one direction whereby the slot cams the spring finger out of engagement with the teeth so that the slide plate may then be moved in a given direction.
2. In combination with the side frame of a window, a rack plate having rack teeth therealong and lateral flanges, a slide plat havingoverturned edges to embrace said flanges and slide along the rack plate, a curtain-supporting memher on said slide plate, a spring finger on the slide plate to engage the teeth of the rack plate and latch the slide plate from movement in one direction, a releasing plate disposed between the rack and slide plates and having a slot through which the end of the spring finger extends, a finger piece on the front of the slide plate, said slide plate having a slot through which a portion of the finger piece extends to the rear of the slide plate and a connecting element extending from the inner end of the finger piece back of the slide plate to the lower end of the releasing plate whereby the movement of the finger piece can move the releasing plate in a given direction whereby the slot in the releasing plate cams the spring finger out of engagement with the rack teeth so that the slide plate may then be moved in a given direction.
