Abstract

878,854. Stuffing-box substitutes. SHAW & CO. Ltd., FRANCIS. June 20, 1960 [June 17, 1959], No. 20747/59. Class 122 (5). A shaft gland for machines in which materials liable to harden or form lumps are treated, such as internal mixers for rubber or plastics, comprises a packing sleeve 4 rotatable with the shaft 2 within a stationary bush 3 and having a helical groove 7 on its outer surface and a ring of teeth 8 on its inner end co-operating with teeth 10 in the bush to grind and reduce material passing the teeth. The sleeve 4 is in halves secured together by screws and is fixed to the shaft by a set-screw 6. The helical groove 7 may be of either hand. The teeth 8 and 10 are frusto-conical and of saw-tooth form, the teeth 10 being on an insertion piece 9 secured to the bush 3 which is fitted to the shaft housing 1. Oil or grease may be supplied to the gap between the bush and the sleeve through passages and a bore 14 in the bush. A leakage collecting box may be fitted at the outer end of the gland.
