Abstract

878,824. Locking nuts and bolts. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Dec. 5, 1958 [Sept. 6, 1957], No. 28213/57. Class 89(1). [Also in Group XXVIII] A blanking-off cap 1 which is adapted to be screwed on to a gas cock outlet 2 is provided with means for preventing its accidental removal from the outlet, the means comprising a washer 9 mounted for rotation relatively to the cap in the direction in which the latter would require to be rotated to unscrew it from the outlet, the washer 9 having, however, means for restraining its rotation relatively to the cap in the opposite direction, and a cable 18, one end of which is fixed to the washer 9; when the other end of the cable is fixed relatively to the outlet 2 and the cable is fully wound about the cap by rotation of the washer 9 relatively to the cap, the cable will oppose unscrewing of the cap. The outlet 2 is provided with a cylindrical plug 5 which enters a conical end portion 4 of the outlet bore. The washer 9 is carried by a stem 7 of the plug 5 and provided with equidistantly spaced slots 10 which are engaged by ratchet-like teeth 11 protruding from a washer 8 also carried by the stem 7, the washer 8 having pins 12 for engaging holes 13 in the end wall of the cap 1. Riveted to the end of the stem 7 is a cup 15 for retaining a spring 16 which urges the washer 9 into engagement with the washer 8. In operation the washer 9 is turned, by means of integral lugs 17, in the unscrewing direction of the cap 1 until the cable 18 is taut, the teeth 11 engaging the slots 10 to prevent the washer 9 from turning in the opposite direction. To remove the cap 1, the washer 9 is moved away from the washer 8 against the action of the spring 16 thus disengaging the teeth 11 from the slots 10 and allowing the cable 18 to be unwound. Alternatively, the teeth 11 may be provided on the washer 9 and the slots 10 provided in the washer 8 or teeth on the washer 9 may cooperate with slots in the end wall of the cap 1. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), pegs carried by the end wall of the cap 1 cooperate with indentations in the washer 9. Alternatively, Fig. 4 (not shown), pegs carried by the washer 9 co-operate with depressions formed in the end wall of the cap 1.
