Abstract
822,016. Stud and socket fasteners; nuts and washers. K. A. C. Ltd. Nov 2, 1956 [Dec. 8. 1955; April 18, 1956], Nos. 35296/55 and 11879/56. Classes 44 and 89(1) A stuct and socket fastener comprises a unitary stud assembly and a separate socket, the stud assembly comprising a stud 1 whose shank is adapted to pass through a hole in one member 9, Fig. 4, to be fastened and through the socket 22 which is secured by rivets to register with a hole 24 in the other member 23 to be fastened; the shank, being screw threaded, has a nut 13 thereon and a detent washer 17 which has flats 18 on its internal periphery to engage with longitudinal flats 10 on the stud 1 to prevent rotation of the washer 17 relative to the stud. Detents 16 on the washer 17 engage with co-operating grooves 15 on the nut 13 to prevent unintended rotation of the nut 13 and to lock the stud and nut for unitary rotation except when the nut is restrained against rotation. The socket 22 has an internal flange 27 with gaps 28 to permit the passage through of nut 13 which has projections 14, the nut 13 after passing through the socket and after initial rotation prevents withdrawal of the stud asembly from the socket. Stop means 29, on the underside of the socket 22, engage the projections 14 and arrest the initial rotation of the nut and also prevents further rotation while the stud 1 is rotated to draw the two members 9 and 23 together. Two smaller stops 30 are also provided so that the tightened stud 1 has to be unscrewed far enough to permit the projections 14 of the nut to clear stops 30 before removal of the stud assembly from the socket. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the detent washer 17 is on the side of the nut 13 away from the head 2 of the stud and is pressed into engagement with the nut by a spring 19, the nut 13, washer 17 and spring 19 being housed in a cap 20 having slots 21 to accommodate the projections 14 of the nut, the cap 20 being screwed on to the stud and rotating with the nut 13. A cylindrical ejector collar 5 adjacent the head 2 has a spring 4 between the head and collar to urge them apart when the nut is released from the socket, the collar has a flange 7 to seat in the flanged opening 8 in the member 9, Fig. 4. A central spigot 11 on the end of the stud 1 carries a stop washer 12 to prevent removal of the nut, washer &c. after assembly. In the embodiment of Fig. 6, not shown, detent means co-operating with detent washer 17 are provided in the cap 13. In Fig. 7, the cap 20 is dispensed with and washer 17<SP>11</SP> is on the head side of nut 13<SP>11</SP>, the springs 4 and 19 being replaced by a single spring 14<SP>11</SP> between the head 2<SP>11</SP> and the washer. The socket 22<SP>11</SP> is similar to socket 22 except that stops 30 are replaced by stops 30" having an inclined cam surface instead of being square ended. The stud asembly may be secured to the panel 9 or may be separate.
