Abstract

878,722. Preventing furnace corrosion. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd., WHITTINGHAM, G., and RENDLE, L. K. Nov. 10, 1959 [Nov. 10, 1958], No. 36001/58. Class 51 (1). Ammonia comprising 0.5-9% by weight of the sulphur in the fuel is injected into a furnace at a point in the combustion zone where the temperature lies between 120-500‹ C. and a solid additive is injected into the flame in an amount equal to 0.05-0.4% by weight of the total fuel. The ammonia may be produced by injecting a suitable compound into the furnace, and the solid additive may be any or a mixture of one or more of the oxides, hydroxides, sulphates or carbonates of calcium, barium, strontium or magnesium, an aluminium silicate such as china clay, or fly-ash. Powdered dolomite may be used. The injection of ammonia into the combustion chamber and a solid additive into the flame prevents corrosion or incrustation of the high temperature and low temperature surfaces in the flue gas path. The ammonia may be supplied in the form of a compound which liberates ammonia under the operating conditions of the furnace. Specifications 797,439 and 878,723 are referred to.
